Story
Over 250 Years of Coffee Tradition and Innovation
For more than 250 years, we have been cultivating the art of coffee roasting, making Turm Kaffee the oldest coffee roastery in Switzerland. Over the centuries, we have continuously refined our coffee quality through innovation, building extensive expertise that we proudly share with our customers, along with our passion for exceptional coffee.
The Founding of the Colonial Goods Store “Behind the Tower”
In 1761, Johannes Schlatter founded his grocery store in a house on Turmgasse. Located in the shadow of the imposing St. Laurenzen Tower, the shop soon became known locally as “behind the tower.” Even then, green coffee beans were imported from Java and sold to local households. Both the coffee trade and the name “Turm” (Tower) have endured — and to this day, Turm Kaffee continues to win over customers with uncompromising quality.
Schlatter, Rieser and Leuthold
Over the centuries, three visionary entrepreneurial families have shaped the success of the company.
In 1885, the Schlatter family passed the business on to the Rieser family. In 1945, Willi Leuthold, grandfather of today’s main shareholder, Stefan Leuthold, took over the company and continued to develop its coffee tradition with foresight and dedication.
The Coffee Roastery at the Bogentor
In 1849, the Pletscher family founded the “Bogen Kaffee” roastery in Schaffhausen. Since 1977, it has been part of Turm Kaffee and continues to roast coffee on site at the historic Bogentor. The shop, located in the pedestrian zone, remains a small haven for coffee and tea lovers to this day.
Continuous Growth
Thanks to our long-standing tradition and uncompromising quality standards, Turm Kaffee has grown steadily over the years. Growth in a saturated market is anything but a given and is only possible through the dedication and expertise of our motivated team.
Our employees also showcase their knowledge beyond the company, participating in national and international competitions, and have already received numerous awards.
Tradition Meets Modernity

Coffee culture has changed dramatically: coffee is no longer just a beverage, but a lifestyle product.
Much like wine, today’s coffee lovers want more than just a good cup. They want to know where their coffee comes from, how it is grown, and under what conditions it is produced. In response, we continuously develop new and innovative coffee blends and provide transparent insights into the social and environmental conditions in the countries of origin.
Coffee as an Art Form
After more than 250 years of refining our coffee expertise, we now celebrate our finest coffees almost as works of art.
And of course, you can learn this craft with us. Our courses and training programs will guide you on the path to becoming a true barista master.
